Yorkshire Building Society
The Yorkshire Building Society was first launched in 1864 under the name of ‘Huddersfield Equitable Permanent Benefit Building Society’ and its three directors were a dentist, a plumber and a shoemaker. The total assets at that time were £4,044 13s 5d with a clientele of six. In 1866 the West Yorkshire Building Society was formed and set up at the Royal Hotel Dewsbury with a staff of only two. As the years passed following many changes it was in 1982 that the Yorkshire Building Society was eventually named and this was following a merger with the Huddersfield & Braford and West Yorkshire Building Societies.
Another merger took place when the Yorkshire Building Society united with the Haywards Heath Building Society. By 1999 the Societies assets reached £10 billion.
In 2001 the Yorkshire Building Society became Britain’s 3rd largest mutual society with over £11 billion of assets, by 2008 these assets became over £23 billion and membership reached 2 million.
Many mergers later the Yorkshire Building Society has assets amounting to around £33 billion and a clientele of 3.5 million.
The society has a variety of mortgages on offer that include fixed rate mortgages, offset mortgages, tracker mortgages and mortgages for first time buyers.
